How does Life Coaching differ from Counselling?
Life Coaching works very differently to Counselling. The aim of counselling and the idea of 'therapy' in general is to help people get in touch with their true emotions and express those in a healthy way. The aim of coaching is to help people get in touch with who they really are and what they really want from life and support them to go out there and create just that.
Counselling tends to focus mostly on the past. With Coaching we focus on NOW, where you are at present and where you want to be, of course, when relevant we can look into the past to better our understanding of where we are, but this is not the focus. The focus is on the future. Bridging the gap between your NOW and what your future NOW will be.
The most striking difference is that coaching is about ACTION and attaining our goals from within to our outter world. Life Coaching is very effective for the vast majority who simply want more from their lives or are 'stuck in a rut'.
Counselling can be powerful, but there is no one-fixes-all solution and it is worth noting that different types of growth work, counselling and therapy can be helpful relative to where you are in your own development, each is more like a stepping stone to bring you to the next.
What happens in Coaching Sessions?
In the first few sessions I will assist you in assessing your life overall and identify the initial areas that need attention. Then as the sessions continue we will work together to achieve clarity and confidence, so that you can take the steps to create the life you want.
All this will take place in a safe and non-judgemental environment of our sessions together. At the end of each session I will assign some growth work or tasks for the following week. Each week we will review how you are progressing and identify any challenges that are creating blocks giving you ongoing support and clarification along the way.
How long would we work together?
For best results, the minimum recommended is 6 sessions over 8 weeks. This is because significant life changes take time to assess, implement and lock in to your new way of being. Some of my clients achieve their goals after 2 sessions and others enjoy progressing so much they continue to come for 12.
We assess your progress every 3 sessions to evaluate how much value you are getting from our relationship, to assess how you are finding the process and taking stock of the progress and consciously decide about continuing to work together.
Most of my clients find a weekly basis for the first 3-4 sessions helps to build up momentum and confidence. From there, depending on how the client feels, we can move to a fortnightly basis and then on to a monthly basis.
My aim is to work with you in the most efficient and effective way for you to get the results you want, whether that is 2 or 10 sessions, that entirely depends on you.
How do you measure your clients success?
My only measurement of my clients success is their feedback. This is why I have created the self-assessment process that all of my clients undertake after every 3 sessions, to ensure that they are getting what they need and want from our relationship and to ensure we are maximising our partnership.
As I say to my clients, your success depends on the extent to which you act on what you learn through our sessions. For some clients, they take immediate action and develop at the speed of lightening, for other's they take it slower initially, building confidence and gradually develop, the pace is entirely up to each client and what feels right to them.
Of course, as an experienced Coach, I can hear, see and feel all the signs of clients getting real value from our work and acting on their new knowledge and perspective to change their lives before my very eyes.
How do face-to-face sessions work?
I meet my clients in a location that works well for them, I see clients in my office in Ballincollig and I can also arrange to meet clients in Cork city in Ireland. For corporate or business clients, I can work from your premises, availing of a conference or meeting room.
